On March 15th, the Fifth National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest Finals was hold at University of Science and Technology of China, three students selected from School of Mathematics (SOM) at SWJTU passed the contest in Sichuan division and qualified for the finals for non-mathematical-major professional contest. Student Yao Qingsong from SPA won the first prize and Xie Weiliang from Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering, Wu Hao from Mao Yisheng Honors College won the second prize, winning great honor for our school.

As the most influential academic contest in china, the number of participants also ranks the first place. The contest is divided into class of mathematical major and class of non-mathematical-major. The target group of participants is made of at least sophomore students at universities, which aims at stimulating students’ interest in mathematics, cultivating students’ ability of analyzing and resolving problems to finally find out and select innovative talents in mathematics. In the preliminary match stage, there are 28 competition divisions, covering 52102 candidates including 12032 students of mathematical major and 40070 students of non-mathematical-major, 5218 students more than the last year. After serious competition of the preliminary match, there are 278 students from over 150 universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, USTC (University of Science and Technology of China) and so on coming into the finals.
